Rayner joined the A/S trawler Loch Tulla, before taking command of the corvette Verbenain late 1940. After a spell with the Eastern Fleet he was given command of the destroyer Shikariin the North Atlantic, but after 9 months he took over another destroyer, the Warwick, in which he was sunk. He at once moved to the destroyer Highlander, then took over 30 Escort Group in Pevensey Castle where he stayed until 1945. £4.00
